Busy, Busy, Busy

Its always busy I make it that way. Mainly there is alot i want to accomplish. Work is normal read in to that as needed. Im working out everyday which is going great. I can see and feel the difference. Kelsie and I are working heavily in the shop right now preparing for mothers day. She turned and finished a bowl this evening that was beautiful. Talon and nate and I have had a great time lately, wednesday we rode skateboard in the evening and I suspect and xbox night is coming up soon. Annie is doing awesome, beautiful, and as usual super nice. I just felt like talking a bit so thats almost all. Well as with most people lifes been busy lately. But heres something for the non facebookers.
Loaded a couple videos online to Vimeo and AWN. One is an animation of the evil KFJR head spinning and the other is a short logo animation. Look online and search for "kungfujackrabbit" should be too many of those around....lol

Otherwise working on normal day job work in Cry engine - gamelike. And in my freetime im working on some film effects, video and 3d compositing, RED camera footage of my car in one of the projects, and another animation project. Pretty busy not to mention the wifes surgery and my daughter learning zbrush and one of the boys learning to ride a bike ....whew. Its a whirlwind, but completely unhectic right now. Seems like all is going well.

So Talon my son also wanted his car painted like the charger and that was a blast. He already had lights and a stereo so that little mini charger (pontiac solstice) is really a cool toy!

Okay moving on The car is getting lighting and interior details which im working on along with my slew of various other project like cutting the emblems for the front and back out of aluminum and building the car in 3D.

Regarding the 3D version im making it pretty accurate to what the vehicle actually looks like. Takes a bit of time but its cool I dig it. Plus im also making additional layers to turn on all the mods I want to make on the real car so the model is a little elaborate. Here is a pic of the model in progress now....Its not done, so ..... I have alot more to do, but I felt like a test render today to show some progress.

Eidetic memory

I remember things all the way back into childhood. Concentrating I fully see the horse field by my tree house where I lived when I was 4-6 years old. Not just the place but details like the way the yard was sloped. I still remember most of whne I fell out of the tree house on the barbed wire fence there. Looking down I remember it. I dont remember hitting the fence though. Probably better not to remember that. I remember conversations from college, and with old friends, most everything up to conversations at lunch yesterday with the guys from work. Remembering the waitress putting forks on the table and everyone using the chopsticks instead is easy. But think hard can you look around and see where people placed the wrappers from their chopsticks after they opened then? What direction did everyone lay the chopsticks on the soysauce dipping dish? Who took off their coat? I did, but ben didnt as he sat across from me.
Now I have to admit these details are not for everything I see, and the more hectic and stressfull life is, or work is, the less I notice. I guess there is only so much space in there to store useless data.
Whats all this mean? Nothing... Try me sometime though and see what i recall of a specific time you pick to test this out on.

Okay so I had the website down several times since I became art director for fats.
Its been up recently and really going through major growing pains. So Im finally pretty happy with the layout, the style, the general way all the portfolio is presented. And of course the ease of use.
Please visit the main gallery page and anything else in the site youd like. There will be more updates esopecially in the travel area as I show some of the cool places Ive seen in the past few years.

THE Right Brain vs Left Brain test ... do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?
If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa. Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.

Website progress

Well updating my website is of course a big task. I'm still knockin out a litttle more each night. Strangely enough its my galleries that seem to be last on my priorities so far. Probably in large part due to the amount of work that its taking to get in the number of pics from my recent trips. Just in Scotland alone I took around 7000 photos so you can imagine how it is to sort thru and pick just about 20 or so at most. I promise to keep rolling on this so please stop in and I'll be sure to post here when its done. And thats what i will be considering a final release of the site for now. So ill be hitting up all my friends for feedback.

Well Its been over a year since i posted in this blog. I'll have to do better, i know.

Its been a great year and a half. I think since I last wrote I've been to Scotland, Australia and Japan. I love traveling. I will eventually finished this newest update to my website and get all the pictures loaded. I was also promoted to Creative Director from Art Director in Nov 06 so I've now settled into this position. In my spare time I continue work on a new game as well as many wood working design projects. Just yesterday i finished up a big project, for my oldest daughter Destinee, a new bed. I'll try and post pictures either her or on my website as soon as i get a picture with her room cleaned up! Otherwise my two girls are doing great in school and my two little boys are doing great as well. The boys are just beginning schooling at home with my wife Anne. Talon is only for so its a great time for him to start, but too soon to see him go to preschool.

Im still working thru what i want the website to look like. And the reason is Im working thru in my head what I want to get out of the website.

Im beginning to think some how the mix of my side studio and my urge to scream about art being dead will have to work on a compromise.
On the one hand for some time I've seen a negative attitude towards artists, and that really pisses me off. Especially when its from coorporate middle management between pokes to the blackberry that is permanently attached to most of their face. The type of people also seems to have a common characteristic. The type that are in management but some how still seem to lack even the basic social skills a person requires in a professional atmosphere to avoid being rude. I don't have to really worry about this being directed at me currently, but that's not the point. I feel like the art community is looked down upon more as of late in the way of social status. And that leads to many other negative things in the future. Say an artist is passionate, the business man can identify this and exploit it. Should the next artist stand firm and provide a confident persona....Well the possibility of work becoming scarce is a possibility. There are a lot of starving artists out there. And the global corporate market knows it!
Well we can now admit the damage has been done and as an artist I must feel its within my realm to be capable of fixing this catastrophe.
My method so far is to infiltrate the higher levels of corporate and show the worth first of ART. What is Art? What can it do for me? Then the real kicker......The worth of an artist. Because the artist is not only graphics and visuals but a designer, a skilled problem solver, a dreamer.
Now there is an area for thought......The dreamers. Not all dreamers are artists and dreamers are found everywhere, but when an artist, designer, dreamer sort of person evolves its pretty evident that boundaries are not real. I think those middle managers put the boundaries there to fake out the ones with less will power.

So the only question is direction and what to do first. I'll let you know what I picked next time.

Far as I know no one is aware I've even started this blog, and I haven't said much about it. Not really used to letting anyone in my head so for now I feel like this is an open forum for me that no one is actually reading.

So I'm supposed to be working on a new demo reel, for a rather prestigious studio but I've had trouble sitting down to do it with the holidays and all. I've always been pretty dedicated about furthering my career and my knowledge of 3d. I still read a lot and make a lot of tests to understand and make sure I can actually do new things and find new methods before it becomes common knowledge on CGTalk. But in the last couple years I had an older daughter who came to live with me fullt time, my younger girl is needing more attention, and I've had two little boys. Oh and a new dog. So since I have a pretty decent job its been more efficient to focus on making my department run better, smoother, rather than work on an outside short movie or a new demo reel. Which brings me to today. The holidays are here, there is a studio I'd like to work for interested and the reel just needs to get done. I'm really enjoying the "normal" life I've come into in the last couple years and my position at work is good. I have as much control as I go after, and I am really pretty dedicated to making my artists a place that's good for them. A place where they can see the work and how much its improving the visuals in our product. A place where they are having fun and still pushing their own limits as I push their limits...LOL Well then on the other hand I miss really kicking myself into a high gear and moving on to what I consider my last stops career wise. I'm looking at joining the bigger studio and applying everything I've been learning for the past 10 years I've been doing this and see how it looks to better a place that puts out film instead of something to just military. I miss working in a studio that has mainly artists and fewer engineers. Although its not fair anylonger to be called an artist. Most 3D artist are techniceans, engineers, problem solvers, thinkers, and just so much more than the label artist can cover.
I've really shown the changes I can make in the last 2 years at my work, and I think that's still only about 1% percent of the changes I'll be able to dream up in the next year. But I'm really wanting to put the focus in another product.
You know the saying "Would you rather be a big fish in a little pond, or a little fish in a big pond?" Well I think since I graduated from college and well even through college I've been steadily jumping into a bigger and bigger pond. So far I don't seem to have any trouble growing to be the biggest fish. But since I heard of the opportunity with this larger studio its become clear I really would like to be the smaller fish is the bigger pond. I think its a matter of needing to have room to grow. I feel I can do more and I prove it regularly. Its not a question anymore. I'd like to not be the director, but rather take the job as a TD and be the best TD they've ever heard of. Then later I'll just do more and make it better.
Room to grow and being around others who know things I don't sounds very inspiring. Just within myself I like seeing the potential and working with it to make it worth something tangible. What could I do with "focus" and more artists.....Wow what could we make.

Lets see if I can get the demo done and then take the..."Next step"
